The Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching certifications from Cisco Certification was established in 2001 and is aimed at students who are currently employed in the small and medium-sized business environments, or those who want to find employment in those environments.

The Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching certifications certifies that a successful student has learnt the knowledge need to sell, design, install, and support the core infrastructure of a Cisco solution for small and medium-sized businesses. The successful certified student will have knowledge of building, configuring, and troubleshooting campus networks and remote access networks using Cisco Catalyst multilayer switching technologies over high-speed Ethernet and Cisco routers connected in LANs and WANs. These are all fields in the small and medium-sized business environments.

The Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching certifications is generally available only to students who have success fully acquired the Cisco CCDA, CCNP, or CSE certification.

There are five career paths with their own required exams. These are:

Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching Sales Specialist, which the successful student will achieve by passing the Cisco 646-057 RSAM exam

Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching Specialist, which the successful student will achieve by passing the Cisco 642-801 BSCI or 642-891 Composite exam and the Cisco 642-053 RSSE/FE exam

Cisco Routing and Switching Field Specialist, which the successful student will achieve by passing the Cisco 642-055 ARSFE exam

Cisco Routing and Switching Sales Specialist, which the successful student will achieve by passing the Cisco 646-002 ARSAM exam

Cisco Routing and Switching Solutions Specialist, which the successful student will achieve by passing the Cisco 642-054 RSSSE exam

Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching Recertification:

A successful Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching student will hold their certification for two years only, after which the Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching student must re-validate their certification by retaking and passing the Cisco Access Routing and LAN Switching exam or taking and passing the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert written exam.
